Google Trends & SEO Keyword Projections

Earlier today I read a post entitled “The Death of Web 2.0”   A well written post by Robin Wauters over at TechCrunch, it addressed the declining attention placed on the term Web 2.0, as dictated by Google Trends.  While the post itself was interesting, it addresses several concerns clients and I have been having about SEO as well as projected declines, and increases, in keyword and phrase attention for SEO purposes on the web.

One particular client, a web design firm, has been concerned with their title and meta information, as their traffic for particular terms has steadily been declining over the past couple years.  Oddily enough, their placement for their “city + website design” had not changed, they are currently number one.  So, naturally they wanted to expand further upon the term with more long tail stems. However, this would have been wasted effort.

I consulted Google Trends and unfortunately, the term “web site design” in on the decline, resulting in the steady drop in traffic.

The next step, after explaining many times through skepticism, is to change as the times do.  One of the easiest and most reliable tools to see where the trend is headed on the internet is using Google Insight, a Google Trends and Keyword tool hybrid.  This can provide the best direction to steer an SEO campaign that has gone sour, or better yet to track the market for a web site and correlating demand.
